Japanese Support Key to Malaysia’s Push Into AI, Semiconductor and Quantum Technologies, Says Anwar
TOKYO: Malaysia is seeking stronger collaboration with Japan as it accelerates efforts to build advanced capabilities in semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing and next-generation chip packaging technologies.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Japanese government support and industry partnerships will play a critical role in helping Malaysia strengthen its position within the global technology value chain.
Speaking during a question-and-answer session following his keynote address at the Nikkei Forum in Tokyo, Anwar said Malaysia is actively positioning itself beyond traditional manufacturing and low-cost production by embracing digitalisation and emerging technologies.
According to him, the country has already established itself as an important semiconductor hub within Southeast Asia and is now moving towards higher-value segments of the industry.
“Malaysia is no longer focused solely on lower-end semiconductor activities. We are increasingly involved in advanced packaging and other higher-value processes that are becoming crucial to the future of the industry.
“This is where collaboration with Japanese companies and support from the Japanese government become extremely important,” he said.
Anwar noted that Malaysia’s ambitions extend beyond semiconductors, with growing attention being placed on quantum technologies and other advanced digital sectors expected to shape future economic growth.
He said the country is learning from international partners that possess more mature expertise in these areas while building its own technological capabilities.
Beyond digital transformation, Anwar identified energy transition as another strategic pillar of Malaysia’s long-term economic development agenda.
He highlighted the role of Petronas in supporting the country’s energy ambitions and providing a strong foundation for future growth.
The Prime Minister also reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to advancing the ASEAN Power Grid initiative, which seeks to improve regional energy connectivity and cooperation.
He said the initiative has gained support from countries including Vietnam, Laos and Singapore, while collaboration with Sarawak continues to strengthen regional energy integration efforts.
While pursuing emerging industries, Anwar stressed that Malaysia will continue to nurture its traditional economic strengths rather than abandon sectors that have historically contributed to national growth.
The government’s strategy, he said, is to ensure that established industries and new technology-driven sectors complement one another in driving economic transformation and supporting Malaysia’s aspiration to become a high-income nation.
Anwar also emphasised that political stability, institutional strength and policy clarity remain fundamental to sustaining investor confidence and long-term economic progress.
He said gradual but consistent reforms will continue to be implemented to strengthen Malaysia’s economic foundations while creating a more competitive environment for future investment and innovation.
