Courier’s RM3,500 Job Ends in Arrest as PGA Seizes 210kg Cannabis in Kelantan

PASIR MAS: A suspected drug courier’s mission to deliver a large consignment of cannabis was cut short after authorities intercepted him in Kelantan, preventing him from collecting a RM3,500 payment for the job.

The 35-year-old man was arrested at about 8.30pm in Kampung Kubang Puyu, Meranti, during a routine patrol by the Pasukan Gerakan Am (PGA). Officers reportedly flagged the vehicle after observing suspicious driving behaviour along the route.

Southeast Brigade commander Ahmad Radzi Hussain said the suspect attempted to flee upon realising he was being pursued. A chase followed, spanning roughly 10 kilometres before the vehicle was stopped and the suspect detained.

A search of the Proton Saga BLM uncovered multiple boxes filled with compressed blocks of dried plant material believed to be cannabis, weighing an estimated 210 kilogrammes. The scale of the seizure points to a significant trafficking operation.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had allegedly agreed to transport the drugs on behalf of a Thai national. He was promised RM3,500 for each successful delivery, suggesting that he was operating as a courier within a broader smuggling network.

Authorities believe the drugs were collected from an illegal crossing point along the border before being transported to an undisclosed destination within the country.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries severe penalties upon conviction. Police are continuing their investigation to identify other individuals linked to the operation and to determine the full extent of the network involved.

Following the arrest, both the suspect and the seized items were taken to the Pasir Mas district police headquarters for further action.

Despite his alleged role in the operation, a urine test conducted after his arrest returned negative results, indicating that he was not under the influence of drugs at the time.

The incident underscores ongoing challenges faced by enforcement agencies in curbing drug trafficking activities, particularly in border areas where syndicates exploit remote routes to move contraband.
