Confidence Crisis in Negeri Sembilan: UMNO Balances Support and Dissent Within Unity Government

KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 — UMNO is navigating a delicate political situation in Negeri Sembilan by respecting the stance of Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen who have lost confidence in the Menteri Besar, while continuing to back the state’s Unity Government.

UMNO Secretary-General Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party’s position reflects a balancing act between upholding internal party principles and maintaining broader coalition stability.

He explained that the BN assemblymen’s decision was rooted in concerns over issues tied to the state’s traditional institutions and constitutional framework, rather than mere political disagreement.

“UMNO respects the position taken by BN representatives, but remains committed to supporting the Unity Government to ensure stability and public welfare are not compromised,” he said.

He stressed that the matter goes beyond routine political differences, touching on sensitive issues involving customary institutions and governance norms within the state.

In response to the growing tension, UMNO has called for urgent discussions between coalition partners, particularly involving its political bureau and that of Pakatan Harapan (PH), to resolve the dispute.

According to him, such engagement is necessary to address disagreements through established consultation mechanisms under the Unity Government framework, including the designated council for resolving policy disputes.

“The differences must be handled in a structured and respectful manner to preserve both the integrity of the coalition and public confidence in governance,” he added.

UMNO also reaffirmed its commitment to defending the institution of the Malay Rulers, which it considers a fundamental pillar of national sovereignty.

Recent developments involving customary and royal institutions in Negeri Sembilan have sparked tensions and misunderstandings among coalition partners, highlighting the sensitivity of the issue.

Political observers suggest that UMNO’s stance signals an attempt to avoid open confrontation within the coalition while still acknowledging internal pressures from its elected representatives.

The situation is widely viewed as a critical test of the Unity Government’s resilience at the state level, particularly in managing ideological differences without destabilising governance.

If left unresolved, the confidence crisis could have broader implications for inter-party relations and potentially trigger further political uncertainty within the coalition.
