Buakaw Focused on Long-Term Legacy Ahead of Malaysia Debut Bout
KUALA LUMPUR: Renowned Muay Thai figure Buakaw Banchamek is setting his sights on building a lasting legacy in the sport as he prepares for his first competitive appearance in Malaysia.
The 44-year-old will headline the TFight All Star tournament at Titiwangsa Stadium, marking a significant milestone in his international career.
Longevity built on discipline
Buakaw noted that maintaining a long career in Muay Thai is a challenge many fighters fail to overcome due to the sport’s intense demands.
“I continue because I love Muay Thai. Training, learning and staying physically prepared are essential for me,” he said via a translator.
He emphasised that entering the ring without proper preparation is not an option, as confidence is closely tied to readiness.
Experience offers strategic advantage
Ahead of his bout against Meng Gao Feng, Buakaw said his experience against diverse fighting styles — including opponents from China — gives him a clearer tactical approach.
“I’ve studied his fights and understand the style. That helps me adapt and plan for the match,” he said, adding that he is eager to compete before Malaysian fans.
Showcasing talent and elevating the sport
The event will also feature local fighters such as Umar Al-Matin, Mohd Rafi Abdul Manaf and Hasril Nazmi.
TFight founder Shamsueffendi Mohammad said the tournament is designed to raise the standard of Muay Thai competition in Malaysia while providing exposure to homegrown fighters.
He added that the strong international response, including interest from Indonesia, Europe and Thailand, highlights the event’s potential to boost both the sport’s ecosystem and tourism sector.
