Three Men Arrested in Major Drug Bust at Woodlands Checkpoint, Over S$547,000 Worth Seized
SINGAPORE, April 23 — Authorities in Singapore have foiled a suspected drug smuggling attempt, arresting three men and seizing more than 7 kilograms of illegal substances at Woodlands Checkpoint.
The haul included approximately 5,127 grams of cannabis and 2,072 grams of methamphetamine, commonly known as “Ice,” with an estimated street value exceeding S$547,000.
Routine Check Leads to Major Discovery
According to a joint statement by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), the case began during a routine inspection of a Malaysia-registered vehicle on April 14.
Officers discovered two suspicious plastic bags hidden in the car’s boot. Further checks confirmed that the bags contained large quantities of controlled drugs.
Driver Arrested, Two Others Nabbed in Follow-Up Operation
The vehicle’s driver, a 23-year-old Malaysian man, was arrested on suspicion of attempting to smuggle drugs into Singapore.
Subsequent investigations led CNB officers to conduct a follow-up operation near Woodlands Industrial Park on the same day, resulting in the arrest of two Bangladeshi men aged 42 and 36.
Authorities believe the two additional suspects may be linked to the case.
Strict Laws Carry Severe Penalties
Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the operation and identify any broader network involved.
Singapore enforces strict anti-drug laws, and individuals convicted of importing or exporting more than 500 grams of cannabis or 250 grams of methamphetamine may face the death penalty.
Separate Incident Highlights Ongoing Threat
The arrests occurred on the same day as another high-profile case, in which a Portuguese national was detained at Changi Airport with more than 36 kilograms of cannabis in his luggage.
Authorities say such cases highlight the persistent threat of drug trafficking and the importance of strict enforcement at key entry points like Woodlands Checkpoint.
