Apple Expands Cashless Push in Malaysia with Tap to Pay on iPhone Rollout
KUALA LUMPUR: Apple has expanded its digital payments ecosystem in Malaysia with the introduction of Tap to Pay on iPhone, a feature that enables merchants to accept contactless payments without relying on external payment terminals.
The rollout allows businesses — from small traders and pop-up vendors to established retail outlets — to use an iPhone as a payment acceptance device by running a compatible iOS application. The feature is supported on iPhone 11 and newer models equipped with the latest software updates.
Apple highlighted that removing the need for dedicated hardware significantly lowers the cost of entry for merchants, especially small and mobile businesses. This enables them to accept digital payments from virtually any location, improving accessibility and operational efficiency.
In Malaysia, several payment providers are among the first to support the feature, including Stripe and Zoho, along with ADAPTIS, Fiuu and HitPay. These platforms allow merchants to integrate Tap to Pay functionality into their existing payment systems seamlessly.
The feature is expected to deliver benefits across multiple sectors, particularly retail, food and beverage, beauty services and professional industries, where seamless payment experiences are increasingly in demand.
Apple also confirmed that Tap to Pay on iPhone will soon be available at its Malaysian retail location, Apple The Exchange TRX, offering customers a firsthand experience of the technology during checkout.
The system supports Apple Pay, other digital wallets, and contactless cards issued by major payment networks in Malaysia, including American Express, JCB, Mastercard, MyDebit, UnionPay and Visa.
On the security front, Apple reiterated that all transactions are encrypted and processed via the iPhone’s Secure Element, ensuring robust protection of sensitive payment data.
The company also emphasised that it does not store card details or transaction data on its servers and does not track users’ purchases, reinforcing its privacy-first approach.
The introduction of Tap to Pay on iPhone marks another milestone in Malaysia’s journey towards a more inclusive and cashless digital economy.
