Zahid: Any Support for BN Will Only Be Proven When Johor Votes Are Counted
KOTA TINGGI, July 2 — Barisan Nasional (BN) will judge any claims of political support only after ballots are counted in the Johor state election, UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said, stressing that the coalition remains focused on its own campaign rather than external endorsements.
Speaking to reporters after attending the KEJORA Appreciation Ceremony in Kota Tinggi, Ahmad Zahid said statements of support from other political parties would only carry significance if they translated into votes on polling day.
He said BN respects the positions adopted by other political coalitions, including PAS’ recent call urging voters not to support Pakatan Harapan (PH), but emphasised that BN’s priority remains its candidates and election campaign.
“That is their approach. We are conducting our campaign professionally and concentrating on our candidates. Of course, any additional support would be welcomed.”
“Ultimately, we will know the outcome on July 11 when the ballot boxes are opened. That will be the real measure of whether such statements of support are reflected in the votes,” he said.
His remarks came after PAS announced that voters should not support PH candidates in the Johor state election, including in constituencies where the contest is a straight fight between BN and PH.
PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the position formed part of five resolutions adopted during a special meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee earlier this week.
Ahmad Zahid also dismissed suggestions that campaigning for the Johor state election has lacked momentum, describing such views as subjective and inconsistent with BN’s experience on the ground.
He said the coalition’s campaign activities have been actively carried out across the state and that party workers continue to engage voters throughout the election period.
“The perception that the campaign is quiet may come from certain observers, but from BN’s perspective, campaign activities are progressing actively,” he said.
He added that every political coalition is entitled to determine its own position towards BN, whether in support or otherwise.
“We appreciate any support shown to BN, but what truly matters is whether it is translated into votes on July 11 and contributes to the victory of our candidates in the Johor state election,” Ahmad Zahid said.
