Anwar Urges Malaysians to Use Fuel Wisely as Rising Global Prices Strain Subsidy Costs
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called on Malaysians to be more prudent in their fuel usage as rising global oil prices continue to place increasing pressure on the government’s subsidy spending.
He said the administration is making every effort to maintain the subsidised price of RON95 petrol in order to keep inflation in check, despite the growing fiscal burden.
“For now, we will do our best to maintain the RON95 price even though the financial cost is becoming heavier. I urge the public to cooperate by reducing unnecessary usage and avoiding wastage,” he said.
The remarks were made after Friday prayers in Cheras, where he emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in navigating current economic challenges.
Global Pressures Driving Up Costs
The recent surge in global crude oil prices has had a direct impact on government expenditure, particularly in sustaining fuel subsidies that benefit a wide segment of the population.
Malaysia’s broad-based subsidy system has long served as a buffer against sudden increases in fuel costs, but current market conditions are making it increasingly difficult to sustain over time.
While the government has assured that fuel supply remains stable in the near term, rising international prices continue to strain public finances.
Economic analysts note that large-scale subsidies require careful management, especially during periods of volatile and elevated oil prices.
Public Role in Managing Consumption
Anwar stressed that government efforts must be complemented by responsible consumer behaviour, particularly in reducing unnecessary fuel consumption.
Practical measures such as carpooling, better trip planning, and avoiding wasteful driving habits can help lower overall demand.
Such efforts not only ease the government’s subsidy burden but also contribute to controlling inflation and maintaining economic stability.
Balancing Welfare and Fiscal Sustainability
The government now faces the challenge of balancing the need to protect consumers from rising living costs while ensuring fiscal sustainability.
Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, has previously highlighted that prolonged increases in oil prices could significantly impact national expenditure.
In this context, prudent fuel use is seen as a shared responsibility between the government and the public.
He emphasised that conservation efforts are crucial not only in the short term but also for ensuring long-term economic resilience.
The situation reflects the need for a comprehensive approach to managing global economic pressures, combining effective fiscal policies with increased public awareness and cooperation.
