RTM Klik Overseas Access Claim to Be Addressed Soon, Says Fahmi

KOTA BHARU: The claim that World Cup matches streamed through the RTM Klik application can be accessed outside Malaysia will be officially addressed by the Director-General of Broadcasting in the near future.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said he has brought the matter to the attention of Broadcasting Department director-general Ashwad Ismail and requested a comprehensive explanation to clarify the issue.

According to him, the matter is currently being examined before an official statement is issued.

“I have raised the matter with the Director-General of Broadcasting and asked him to issue a full statement regarding this issue,” he said.

Fahmi was speaking to reporters after the appointment ceremony for the chairpersons of the National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi) Advisory Panels for Kelantan here today.

When asked about a proposal to use Malaysia’s MyKad identity card system to restrict RTM Klik access exclusively to local users, Fahmi said the matter had also been discussed.

However, he said it would be more appropriate for RTM’s management to provide further details on the proposal and any technical considerations involved.

“I will leave it to the Director-General of Broadcasting to provide a full explanation on the matter,” he said.

Earlier, social media users circulated a video uploaded by a Malaysian influencer who claimed to have accessed RTM Klik on a smart television while staying at a hotel in Indonesia.

The video allegedly showed World Cup matches being streamed free of charge through the platform despite the user being outside Malaysia.

The incident sparked debate among internet users, with some questioning whether content subject to territorial broadcasting rights should be available overseas.

It also prompted discussions on whether stricter geolocation controls or identity verification measures are necessary to ensure compliance with international broadcasting agreements.

RTM Klik is Radio Televisyen Malaysia’s official streaming platform, offering live television channels, news programmes, entertainment content and sports coverage through its mobile application and website.
