Anwar, Modi Laud Petronas and Gentari for Leadership in India’s Green Energy Transition
PUTRAJAYA, Feb 8 — Malaysia and India have acknowledged the significant strides made by Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) and its clean energy arm Gentari in advancing India’s renewable energy and green hydrogen ecosystem.
The recognition was highlighted in a joint statement issued following talks between Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Both leaders underscored the vast potential for expanding collaboration in large-scale solar energy projects, leveraging Malaysia’s technical expertise to accelerate clean energy solutions and support the shared net-zero ambitions of both countries.
“Malaysia appreciates India’s initiative in establishing the International Solar Alliance,” the statement said, reflecting the leaders’ shared view on the importance of multilateral cooperation in driving the global energy transition.
Beyond energy, Anwar and Modi also acknowledged the strategic role of the semiconductor industry in the global technology landscape and highlighted the mutual benefits of strengthening bilateral cooperation in this sector.
They stressed the importance of deepening collaboration across the semiconductor value chain, with a focus on technological innovation, workforce development and supply chain resilience, to build a competitive and robust ecosystem.
The statement further noted that both leaders welcomed ongoing cooperation initiatives, including partnerships between IIT-Madras Global and the Advanced Semiconductor Academy of Malaysia, as well as between the Indian Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) and the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association (MSIA).
In addition, Anwar and Modi welcomed the formalisation of the Malaysia–India Digital Council (MIDC), recognising its potential as a key platform to advance digital cooperation, spur innovation and explore joint projects in areas such as fintech, e-governance, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, digital public infrastructure (DPI) and emerging technologies.
According to the statement, MIDC will serve as a strategic mechanism to strengthen bilateral digital engagement and support the digital transformation agendas of both Malaysia and India.
The leaders also welcomed the collaboration between NPCI International Limited (NIPL) and PayNet Malaysia to establish bilateral payment linkages.
They noted that the integration would significantly enhance ease of doing business and provide seamless, low-cost remittance and payment solutions for tourists, students and small businesses, further strengthening economic ties and people-to-people connectivity between Malaysia and India.
