Anwar: AI talent development essential to position Malaysia as a regional innovation and professional excellence hub
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia must accelerate the development of artificial intelligence (AI) talent and strengthen the capabilities of its professional workforce to remain competitive in an increasingly technology-driven global economy, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
He said preparing professionals to embrace AI and emerging digital technologies is no longer an option but a strategic necessity if Malaysia is to establish itself as a regional centre for innovation, high-value industries and professional expertise.
According to Anwar, achieving these ambitions will require stronger collaboration between the government and professional organisations to cultivate skilled talent capable of driving the country’s next phase of economic transformation.
The Prime Minister made the remarks after receiving a courtesy visit from a delegation of Balai Ikhtisas Malaysia (BIM) led by its president, Prof. ChM Dr. Juan Joon Ching, where discussions centred on strengthening the nation’s professional ecosystem and preparing Malaysia’s workforce for the AI era.
Sharing details of the meeting through a Facebook post, Anwar said professional bodies possess valuable expertise that can complement government initiatives aimed at enhancing innovation, developing future-ready talent and improving Malaysia’s global competitiveness.
He emphasised that the country’s long-term economic resilience will increasingly depend on its ability to produce professionals who are not only technically competent but also adaptable to rapidly changing technological developments.
“The government values the professional community as an important strategic partner in strengthening national competitiveness, driving innovation and supporting the Madani agenda for the well-being of the people,” he said.
Anwar noted that the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence is reshaping industries, business operations and public services worldwide, making continuous upskilling and professional development increasingly important.
He said Malaysia must ensure its workforce is equipped with the knowledge, digital competencies and innovative mindset needed to seize opportunities created by AI while remaining competitive within the regional and global marketplace.
Beyond technological expertise, the Prime Minister stressed that professional excellence should also be built upon integrity, responsible leadership and a strong commitment to serving national development.
During the meeting, Anwar also received an invitation to attend Hari Ikhtisas Malaysia, an annual event recognising the contributions of professionals from various disciplines whose expertise has helped support Malaysia’s economic, industrial and social progress.
He described the programme as an important platform for celebrating professional achievements while encouraging greater collaboration between government institutions, industry leaders and professional organisations.
According to Anwar, closer partnerships will play a significant role in producing a larger pool of competent, ethical and globally competitive professionals capable of supporting Malaysia’s aspirations in the digital economy.
He expressed confidence that sustained cooperation between the government and the professional community would strengthen the country’s human capital ecosystem, accelerate innovation and enhance Malaysia’s standing as a preferred destination for investment, advanced industries and knowledge-based economic activities.
As artificial intelligence continues to transform economies around the world, Anwar said investing in talent development today will ensure Malaysia is well-positioned to lead future technological advancement while delivering sustainable economic growth and long-term prosperity for the nation.
