Malaysia’s men’s doubles shine as Khai Xing-Aaron and Sze Fei-Izzuddin storm into Japan Open quarter-finals

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s men’s doubles challenge at the Japan Open gathered momentum after two national pairs booked their places in the quarter-finals with commanding performances, keeping the country’s hopes alive in Tokyo.

Young duo Kang Khai Xing and Aaron Tai continued their impressive campaign by producing one of their best performances of the tournament, while experienced pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Mohd Rumsani also progressed with a hard-earned victory over a higher-profile Danish combination.

Ranked world No. 22, Khai Xing and Aaron required just 26 minutes to sweep aside Taiwan’s Lee Jhe Huei and Yang Po Hsuan 21-10, 21-15 in the second round.

The Malaysian pair dominated from the opening rally, using their speed, aggressive attacking play and relentless pressure at the net to deny the Taiwanese duo any opportunity to settle into the match.

Although it was the first meeting between the two pairs on the international circuit, the Malaysians showed remarkable confidence to outplay the world No. 17 combination in straight games, taking a 1-0 lead in their head-to-head record.

Their convincing victory sets up a formidable quarter-final clash against reigning world No. 1 pair Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae of South Korea, who will provide the biggest test yet in the young Malaysians’ campaign.

The impressive run by Khai Xing and Aaron has also reignited discussions among Malaysian badminton supporters regarding the future of the partnership.

Many fans have urged the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to keep the pair together, believing their chemistry and rapid development could produce another world-class men’s doubles combination for the country.

Some supporters have even compared the pair’s explosive attacking style and fast-paced court movement to former world No. 1 legends Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong, whose aggressive approach revolutionised Malaysian men’s doubles during their peak years.

The growing public support has prompted renewed calls for the national coaching set-up to continue investing in the partnership rather than considering future reshuffles, allowing both players to further develop their understanding and consistency at the highest level.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Mohd Rumsani also secured their place in the last eight after overcoming Denmark’s experienced combination Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen.

The world No. 6 Malaysians produced another composed display to record a straight-game 21-18, 21-19 victory in a closely contested 40-minute encounter.

The win marked only their third success over the Danish pair in 12 career meetings, highlighting the significance of the result against one of Europe’s most accomplished men’s doubles partnerships.

Sze Fei and Izzuddin demonstrated excellent composure during the closing stages of both games, successfully absorbing pressure before capitalising on crucial points to seal the match without requiring a deciding game.

The victory keeps alive Malaysia’s hopes of a strong finish in the men’s doubles competition, with the pair now awaiting the winner between Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard and American duo Chen Zhi Yi and Presley Smith in the quarter-finals.

With two Malaysian men’s doubles pairs advancing to the last eight, the national contingent remains firmly in contention for honours at one of the BWF World Tour’s premier events.

Attention will now turn to whether Khai Xing-Aaron can continue their giant-killing run against the world’s top-ranked pair, while Sze Fei-Izzuddin aim to build on their momentum as they pursue a place in the semi-finals and strengthen Malaysia’s challenge for the Japan Open title.
