No Grounds to Delay Melaka State Polls, Government Committed to Constitutional Timeline — Ab Rauf Yusoh
MELAKA: The Melaka state government has maintained that there are no compelling reasons to postpone the upcoming state election, emphasising that the democratic process should proceed in accordance with constitutional provisions.
Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh said the current administration, led by Barisan Nasional, is set to complete its term in December this year, making it necessary for elections to be held within the stipulated timeframe.
He noted that, under the State Constitution, the election may be called at any time from May until the end of the term.
“At this point, I do not see any necessity to delay the election, as there is insufficient justification to support such a proposal,” he told reporters after officiating the Enrique of Malacca Groundbreaking Ceremony.
His remarks come amid growing discussions on whether state elections should be postponed due to evolving global conditions, including geopolitical tensions in West Asia and the ongoing global supply crisis.
Previously, Pontian MP Ahmad Maslan was reported to have suggested bringing a motion to the UMNO Supreme Council to consider postponing elections in Johor and Melaka, citing geopolitical uncertainties.
Meanwhile, Kota Melaka MP and state DAP chairman Khoo Poay Tiong proposed that the state government submit a petition to the King to declare a state of emergency, which could allow for the postponement of elections in light of global supply pressures.
However, Ab Rauf stressed that any decision regarding elections must be guided by constitutional principles and democratic norms, rather than reactive measures to external developments.
He also suggested that the political situation in Melaka remains stable, and therefore does not warrant extraordinary measures such as delaying the polls.
More broadly, election postponements are typically associated with exceptional circumstances such as major natural disasters or public health crises, rather than economic or geopolitical pressures alone.
The state government’s position reflects a commitment to maintaining democratic continuity and respecting the mandate timeline as prescribed by law.
At the same time, the issue is expected to remain under scrutiny, as differing views persist on whether current global challenges justify adjustments to electoral timelines.
