Medthera Launches WalkPort, Bringing Structured Walking Therapy Into Everyday Life
WACONIA: Rehabilitation technology firm Medthera Inc. has introduced WalkPort, a supported walking station designed to allow individuals with mobility challenges to practise walking safely outside traditional therapy settings.
The system aims to solve a persistent challenge in rehabilitation: limited access to consistent walking practice beyond scheduled clinical sessions.
Founder Alan Tholkes said the concept was driven by his own experience following a spinal cord injury, which highlighted how crucial regular movement is for recovery and independence.
Designed for Safe, Guided Movement
WalkPort provides full-body support, enabling users to stand and engage in guided walking motions with reduced risk of falling.
Unlike conventional mobility aids, the system focuses on encouraging natural movement patterns through structured support and repetition.
It includes powered sit-to-stand assistance, stabilisation features to maintain alignment and a companion app that tracks metrics such as steps, duration and cadence.
These features help users build consistent routines, which are essential for improving functional mobility.
Broad Applications Across Patient Groups
The system is intended for individuals living with a range of conditions, including stroke, spinal cord injuries, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis.
It also supports older adults aiming to maintain mobility and reduce physical decline.
Regular use can help improve strength, balance and endurance, contributing to better overall health outcomes.
Bridging the Gap Between Clinic and Home
WalkPort is designed to complement clinical rehabilitation by extending therapy into everyday environments.
It enables patients to continue structured exercises independently, reducing reliance on in-clinic sessions while maintaining continuity of care.
For healthcare providers, the system offers a way to increase repetition and engagement during therapy programmes.
Enhancing Confidence and Independence
Early users have reported noticeable improvements in physical strength and ease of movement after incorporating WalkPort into their daily routines.
Beyond physical gains, the ability to stand and move more frequently has been linked to improved confidence and emotional well-being.
The introduction of WalkPort reflects a growing trend in healthcare innovation, focusing on accessible solutions that empower individuals to actively manage their recovery and maintain independence.
