Penang Evaluates SPICE Arena and PWCC as Key Indoor Venues for 2027 SEA Games
GEORGE TOWN: Penang’s preparations for the 2027 SEA Games are advancing into a critical phase, with two major venues under detailed evaluation to host indoor sporting events.
Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Mordi Bimol said SPICE Arena and Penang Waterfront Convention Centre have been shortlisted as potential sites, pending further technical assessment.
He explained that site visits were conducted to assess the readiness of facilities and to better understand the specific requirements for each sport scheduled to be held in the state.
Venue Allocation Based on Technical Fit
Initial observations suggest that SPICE Arena is well-positioned to accommodate events such as sepak takraw, snooker and billiards, owing to its infrastructure and available space.
Meanwhile, PWCC is being considered for combat and indoor sports including judo, boxing, table tennis and floorball, although final allocations will depend on further coordination with organisers.
The evaluation process also focuses on technical specifications, athlete facilities, and logistical arrangements necessary to meet international competition standards.
Engagement with State Sports Bodies
The visit included discussions with key stakeholders such as the Penang State Sports Council and the state Youth and Sports Department, aimed at aligning preparations and ensuring all requirements are addressed early.
Officials stressed that close coordination among agencies is essential to ensure that the venues are fully equipped and compliant ahead of the event.
Final Venue List Yet to Be Confirmed
Mordi noted that the official announcement of venues will only be made after the Malaysian SEA Games Organising Committee Secretariat completes its review and approvals.
He added that the ministry will continue to oversee coordination efforts and support infrastructure development to ensure smooth execution of the Games.
Penang Among Key Host States
Penang is one of several host locations for the 2027 SEA Games, alongside Sarawak and Johor, with Kuala Lumpur serving as the central hub.
As planning progresses, the selection and readiness of venues will play a crucial role in delivering a successful regional sporting event.
