KBS to Seek Selangor’s Input Before Deciding on SUKMA 2026 Postponement
PETALING JAYA: The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) will first consult the Selangor state government before making any final decision on the proposed postponement of the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA).
Minister Mohammed Taufiq Johari said the consultation process is necessary to ensure that all stakeholders’ interests are considered, particularly in relation to athlete development and national sports planning.
He noted that as the host state, Selangor’s position will be a key factor in determining the next course of action.
“Once we receive feedback from the state government, we will convene a special meeting of the SUKMA 2026 Supreme Committee,” he said.
Multi-Stakeholder Discussion Planned
The proposed meeting will involve representatives from all states, the National Sports Council, and the Olympic Council of Malaysia to allow for a comprehensive discussion on the matter.
According to Taufiq, such a platform is essential to ensure that any decision reflects a collective agreement and takes into account the broader impact on the sports ecosystem.
He also reaffirmed that the ministry respects the views expressed by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah regarding the potential postponement.
Concerns Over Economy and Infrastructure
The Sultan had earlier suggested that SUKMA 2026 be delayed, citing concerns over the global energy crisis and its implications on the national economy.
In addition, the readiness of key infrastructure—particularly the Shah Alam Stadium redevelopment—was highlighted as another important consideration.
The Sultan also raised concerns about the high cost of organising the Games under current economic conditions, calling for careful evaluation before proceeding.
Final Decision Yet to Be Made
SUKMA 2026 is currently scheduled to take place from August 15 to 24, featuring hundreds of events across multiple sports disciplines.
However, the final decision on whether to proceed as planned or postpone the Games will depend on the outcome of upcoming discussions involving federal and state authorities, as well as key sports bodies.
Officials are expected to weigh multiple factors, including financial considerations, infrastructure readiness, and the long-term development of athletes, before reaching a conclusion.
