Malaysia Secures Medical Device Supply Chain as Raw Material Talks with China Continue
JOHOR BAHRU, April 19 — Malaysia is taking proactive steps to safeguard the supply of medical devices by ensuring sufficient access to key raw materials, with ongoing negotiations underway to secure long-term procurement arrangements.
Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said the government’s immediate priority is to stabilise the supply chain by guaranteeing consistent access to essential inputs such as resin and naphtha, which are widely used in the manufacturing of medical devices.
He explained that while discussions with China are still in progress, the government is confident that supply continuity will not be affected. According to him, pricing terms are currently being negotiated under a “willing buyer, willing seller” framework, ensuring that both parties reach a mutually acceptable agreement.
Speaking to reporters during a Hari Raya event at the Pulai parliamentary constituency in Johor Bahru, Dzulkefly stressed that supply security remains the central focus, with pricing considerations being addressed in parallel.
“The priority is to ensure that all necessary supply arrangements are secured. Price negotiations are ongoing, but there are no issues that would disrupt the availability of raw materials,” he said.
The minister was responding to questions regarding potential savings for the government following a strategic agreement between Malaysia’s Medical Device Authority and Chinese partners aimed at strengthening procurement channels for critical materials.
He emphasised that there is currently no indication of supply disruption, adding that the availability of raw materials remains stable and sufficient to meet industry demand. This assurance is particularly important given Malaysia’s role as a key manufacturing hub for medical devices, supplying both domestic and international markets.
The Health Ministry has been closely monitoring developments in the supply chain to mitigate potential risks, especially in light of global uncertainties affecting industrial production and logistics. Measures have been implemented to ensure that any challenges are addressed promptly to avoid impact on healthcare services.
Dzulkefly noted that maintaining a stable supply of medical devices is essential not only for hospitals and healthcare providers but also for the broader healthcare system. From surgical equipment to diagnostic tools, medical devices play a critical role in ensuring effective patient care.
He added that the government remains committed to strengthening resilience within the sector by diversifying supply sources and enhancing coordination with international partners. The ongoing discussions with China are part of this broader strategy to secure reliable access to raw materials.
In a statement issued earlier, the ministry confirmed that the supply of medical devices in Malaysia remains under control, supported by continuous monitoring and mitigation efforts. Authorities have been working closely with industry players to ensure that production levels are maintained and that any potential disruptions are minimised.
The strategic engagement with China is expected to further enhance Malaysia’s ability to manage supply challenges, particularly as demand for medical devices continues to grow both locally and globally.
Dzulkefly reiterated that the government’s focus is on ensuring that healthcare providers and patients are not affected by external factors. By securing raw material supplies and maintaining strong partnerships, Malaysia aims to sustain its position as a reliable player in the global medical device industry.
With negotiations ongoing and supply conditions stable, the ministry expressed confidence that the country will be able to meet current and future demand without significant disruptions, ensuring continuity in healthcare services.
