Ohio Grid Modernisation Nears Finish, Set to Improve Reliability for 16,000 Customers

AKRON, Ohio: A key power grid upgrade in Trumbull County is approaching completion, with FirstEnergy Corp. moving to deliver more stable and resilient electricity supply to over 16,000 customers.

The project, executed by American Transmission Systems, Inc. (ATSI), centres on strengthening infrastructure within Ohio Edison’s service territory, particularly in the Howland and Bazetta areas.

A major component involves rebuilding nearly three miles of the Niles Central–Packard 138kV transmission line, which plays a critical role in delivering electricity across the region. The upgrade is expected to reduce outages and enable faster restoration when disruptions occur.

Outdated wooden poles have been replaced with 22 steel structures anchored in concrete, while new, thicker conductors are being installed to handle higher electrical loads and improve durability.

The modernised infrastructure is designed to withstand severe weather, falling trees, vehicle collisions and wildlife interference — common causes of service interruptions.

Construction began last fall and is on track to be completed by the end of summer.

Mark Mroczynski said the project reflects ongoing efforts to deliver dependable power while preparing the grid for future demand.

He noted that investments in transmission systems over the past decade have already cut high-voltage outages by half, demonstrating the impact of sustained upgrades.

The improvements will also allow electricity to be rerouted more efficiently during emergencies, helping maintain service continuity and minimise downtime.

In practical terms, the upgrade increases both capacity and flexibility, enabling the grid to better manage peak demand during extreme weather conditions.

The strengthened system is expected to support continued residential and commercial growth in the Mahoning Valley by providing a more reliable energy foundation.

The project forms part of FirstEnergy’s long-term Energize365 initiative, which aims to build a smarter and more resilient grid through a planned US$36 billion investment from 2026 to 2030.
