Anwar Signals Performance-Based Candidate Selection for GE16, Emphasises Strong PKR Divisions

KUALA TERENGGANU — Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) will adopt a more performance-driven approach in selecting its candidates for the upcoming general election (GE16), with priority given to divisions that demonstrate strong grassroots support and consistent activity, party president Anwar Ibrahim said.

Speaking at the Terengganu PKR Mini Convention, Anwar underscored that the strength of local party structures would play a decisive role in determining candidate eligibility, signalling a shift towards merit-based evaluation at the grassroots level.

Candidate Selection Tied to Division Strength

Anwar made it clear that divisions lacking active membership or effective organisational machinery would not be considered, even if proposed candidates have backing from central leadership.

He stressed that electoral success depends not only on individual candidates but also on the strength of the support system behind them.

“If a division is weak, even a candidate suggested by the central leadership will not be accepted. We must focus on areas with strong leadership and active members,” he said.

This approach reflects PKR’s intent to strengthen its electoral machinery by ensuring that candidates are supported by well-functioning divisions capable of mobilising voters and executing campaign strategies effectively.

Active Engagement at Grassroots Level

The PKR president highlighted that divisions must demonstrate ongoing engagement with the community through programmes, outreach efforts and consistent interaction with constituents.

He said divisions that are visible and active on the ground are better positioned to build trust and secure voter support.

By linking candidate selection to grassroots performance, PKR aims to ensure that its representatives are closely connected to local communities and responsive to their needs.

Strengthening Communication on Government Policies

Anwar also used the platform to urge party members, especially in Terengganu, to take a more proactive role in communicating the achievements and policies of the Madani Government.

He emphasised the importance of ensuring that the public understands government initiatives, particularly those aimed at addressing poverty and improving livelihoods.

“Our main focus is to uplift those in the hardcore poor category. This requires investment, economic progress and sufficient funding. But these efforts must be explained clearly to the people, and that responsibility lies with party members,” he said.

He noted that effective communication at the grassroots level is crucial in shaping public perception and building confidence in government policies.

Decentralised Decision on Seat Allocation

On the question of seat distribution for GE16, Anwar said the party will allow state-level leadership to determine the number of constituencies PKR will contest.

This decision reflects a decentralised strategy, recognising that local leaders are better positioned to assess ground realities and make informed decisions.

The convention was attended by key party figures, including vice-president Chang Lih Kang, secretary-general Fuziah Salleh and information chief Fahmi Fadzil.

Building Momentum Towards GE16

Anwar’s remarks highlight PKR’s broader strategy of reinforcing its grassroots foundation as it prepares for GE16.

By prioritising divisions with proven performance and active engagement, the party aims to enhance its organisational strength and electoral competitiveness.

The focus on merit-based candidate selection and stronger grassroots communication signals PKR’s intent to present a more disciplined and structured campaign approach in the next general election.
