Legacy of Adibah Amin Honoured at KL Event as Book Launch Raises RM100,000
Kuala Lumpur — A tribute evening in the capital paid homage to the lasting contributions of veteran journalist Adibah Amin, alongside the unveiling of her commemorative publication As I Was Passing (Legacy Edition).
The event, officiated by Che Puan Muda Zaheeda Mohamad Ariff, brought together members of the media, literary figures and admirers who gathered to celebrate her enduring impact on Malaysian journalism and writing.
Organised by Friends of Adibah Amin, the evening featured readings of selected passages from her works by former colleagues, offering attendees a meaningful reflection on her distinctive voice and storytelling.
Adibah’s sister, Khalilah Fadzilah Amin, informed guests that the 90-year-old journalist has been bedridden for the past two years and is currently unable to attend events due to her condition.
She conveyed Adibah’s apologies, explaining that even sitting upright briefly has become difficult. Khalilah also expressed appreciation to the organisers and attendees for honouring her sister’s legacy.
The Legacy Edition book compiles a carefully selected collection of Adibah’s writings, enriched with previously unpublished photographs and her personal autograph, giving readers a deeper connection to her life and work.
The tribute also had a charitable purpose, raising approximately RM100,000 to support her ongoing medical care.
Wong Chun Wai, chairman of Bernama and National Journalist Laureate 2025, described Adibah as a remarkable figure whose work influenced generations of journalists and readers alike.
He noted that her writings left a lasting impression on his own career and praised her as a benchmark in the field.
Also present was A. Kadir Jasin, National Journalist Laureate 2011, who emphasised the importance of ensuring her writings remain accessible to future generations.
He said her bilingual works in Bahasa Melayu and English continue to hold educational value and relevance.
Adibah, who received the National Journalist Laureate title in 2023, made history as the first woman to be honoured with the distinction. Her career spanned journalism, education, literature and the arts, leaving a lasting legacy across multiple fields.
