Malaysia Seeks Clarity from TikTok on Impact of West Asia Crisis on Digital Commerce Operations
KUALA LUMPUR, April 9 — The Malaysian government is seeking clarification from TikTok regarding the impact of the global energy crisis and geopolitical tensions in West Asia on its operations, particularly TikTok Shop’s ecosystem in Malaysia.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the move is aimed at assessing how disruptions in global supply chains and logistics could affect delivery services and overall platform functionality.
He noted that the issue extends beyond digital platforms, potentially influencing businesses, consumers and the broader digital economy.
“The findings will be presented to the National Economic Action Council (MTEN) for further evaluation at the policy level,” he said after attending the TikTok Shop Raikan Raya 2026 event at MITEC.
Fahmi stressed that a clearer understanding of these impacts is essential for the government to formulate appropriate responses to challenges arising from global geopolitical developments.
He also highlighted the rapid growth of TikTok Shop in Malaysia, with millions of users actively participating in digital commerce activities.
To date, more than seven million live streamers are engaged on the platform, contributing to an estimated RM1.9 billion in economic value and generating nearly 147,000 job opportunities.
This growth underscores the increasing importance of digital platforms as drivers of the new economy, particularly for small and medium enterprises leveraging online channels.
Fahmi further urged stronger collaboration between TikTok and the Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia (MCMC), including through the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) initiative.
He noted that NADI centres, especially in rural areas, could serve as hubs for digital skills development and support local communities in participating in the digital economy.
In a related development, MCMC officials are scheduled to meet TikTok representatives in Singapore to discuss key issues, including the potential impact of global crises on platform operations.
The government hopes that continued improvements in internet connectivity will further enable Malaysians to participate in digital commerce and generate income flexibly, regardless of location.
