Anwar Says GE16 Not Soon, Urges Focus on Work, Economy and National Stability

Election not priority amid global uncertainty

IPOH: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated that the 16th general election (GE16) is not imminent, urging Malaysians to prioritise economic stability and national resilience instead.

He said the government’s focus remains on addressing current global challenges rather than engaging in political activities.

“This is not the time for elections. It is time to work and ensure the country remains stable,” he said at the Madani Rakyat 2026 programme in Meru.

Call to reduce political tensions

Anwar stressed that ongoing political disputes could undermine efforts to strengthen the economy.

He urged leaders across the political spectrum to adopt a more responsible approach and focus on real issues affecting the people.

According to him, the current situation requires cooperation rather than continued political rivalry.

Global pressures affecting local economy

He explained that conflicts in West Asia have led to rising oil prices, supply chain disruptions and increased logistics costs.

These developments are directly impacting Malaysians, particularly in terms of living costs and business operations.

Anwar noted that these challenges are part of a broader global economic reality.

Focus on safeguarding economy and people

The government, he said, is concentrating on measures to protect the economy and ensure the well-being of the rakyat.

He emphasised that such efforts require collective support beyond political differences.

“This is not just about politics. It is about keeping our nation strong and protecting our people,” he said.
