Anwar Focuses on Price Stability First, Delays Immediate Economic Stimulus
Government prioritises essential supply and cost control
MERU: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has emphasised that the government will not rush into introducing an economic stimulus package, choosing instead to prioritise stabilising the supply and prices of essential goods.
He said the move is aimed at protecting the public from rising living costs amid global economic pressures linked to the ongoing West Asia conflict.
“The immediate priority is to ensure sufficient supply of essential goods such as cooking oil, flour, sugar, salt, vegetables, fish, meat and chicken,” he said at the Madani Rakyat 2026 programme.
Step-by-step strategy to manage economic impact
Anwar explained that the government is taking a phased approach, starting with securing supply followed by controlling prices.
Only after these objectives are achieved will further measures, including potential economic support for businesses, be considered.
He noted that this strategy helps ensure that government actions remain targeted and fiscally responsible.
Relief options for businesses under consideration
The government is also reviewing several measures to ease the burden on businesses facing higher operational costs.
These include potential tax reductions, tariff adjustments and revisions to certain charges.
Additionally, proposals to delay e-invoicing are being studied as part of broader efforts to support traders during the current economic climate.
Balancing stability and public welfare
Anwar stressed that the government aims to strike a balance between maintaining economic stability and safeguarding public welfare.
He said avoiding rushed stimulus measures is crucial to prevent long-term economic risks.
Amid global uncertainty, he expressed confidence that a cautious and phased approach will help Malaysia manage the impact effectively.
