Malaysia Assures Sufficient Food Supply for Aidilfitri, Public Urged to Avoid Panic Buying
KOTA BHARU – The Malaysian government has assured the public that the supply of essential food items across the country remains stable and sufficient ahead of the upcoming Aidilfitri celebrations.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said current market conditions indicate that the availability of staple food products such as rice, onions and other kitchen essentials is adequate to meet consumer demand during the festive period.
According to him, monitoring conducted by the ministry shows that the national food supply chain remains stable despite the seasonal increase in demand typically seen before major celebrations.
He stressed that there is no reason for consumers to rush into panic buying as sufficient supplies have been secured.
“Alhamdulillah, the situation remains stable ahead of Aidilfitri. Essential food supplies are sufficient to meet public demand.
“Consumers can continue purchasing items as usual without the need for panic buying,” he told reporters.
Mohamad made the remarks after officiating the Sentuhan Agro Madani programme at the Rural Transformation Centre (RTC) in Tunjong here.
Government Monitoring Ensures Stable Supply
The minister said the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has been closely monitoring the supply of essential food items to ensure there are no disruptions.
Various agencies under the ministry have also been working together with suppliers, distributors and retailers to maintain smooth distribution across the country.
He explained that while demand for food products typically rises ahead of festive seasons, the government has implemented measures to ensure that supply remains consistent.
These efforts are aimed at preventing shortages and ensuring consumers can access essential goods without difficulty.
Price Differences Between States Normal
Commenting on food prices, Mohamad noted that variations in prices between states are common and largely influenced by market factors.
He said his visit to Ramadan bazaars in Kota Bharu showed that some food items were sold at lower prices compared to those in major cities like Kuala Lumpur.
According to him, such differences are influenced by logistical costs, local supply conditions and regional market dynamics.
“Price differences between states are normal in an open market system,” he said.
Temporary Shortage of Coconut Milk
While most food supplies remain stable, Mohamad acknowledged that there have been some challenges regarding the availability of coconut milk in certain areas.
However, he assured the public that the ministry is taking steps to address the issue and restore supply stability as soon as possible.
Officials are working closely with suppliers to ensure that coconut milk remains available in the market ahead of the festive season.
Dry Season Not Affecting Food Supply
Addressing concerns about the impact of the ongoing dry season on food production, Mohamad said the current weather conditions have not significantly affected the country’s food supply.
He explained that Malaysia’s food production and supply systems remain resilient and capable of meeting domestic demand.
The government will continue collaborating with farmers, producers and industry players to maintain adequate supply levels.
Mohamad also advised consumers to shop responsibly and avoid excessive purchasing that could temporarily disrupt market supply.
With careful planning and coordinated efforts across the food supply chain, he said Malaysians can celebrate Aidilfitri without worrying about shortages of essential food items.
