Penang Launches Exclusive Durian Tourism Package for Hong Kong Visitors
GEORGE TOWN: Penang has unveiled its first dedicated durian tourism package for the Hong Kong market, marking a new effort to strengthen the state’s reputation as one of Asia’s leading culinary and experiential travel destinations.
Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the initiative was developed through a collaboration involving Tourism Malaysia’s Hong Kong office, Penang Global Tourism and Wing On Travel.
He said the programme aims to attract more travellers from Hong Kong by offering a unique travel experience centred around Penang’s internationally recognised durian industry.
According to Wong, the package represents the first time Penang’s seasonal durian harvest has been transformed into a dedicated tourism product designed specifically for an overseas market.
“Visitors from Hong Kong have long shown strong interest in food tourism, heritage attractions and immersive travel experiences.
“This package allows them to experience one of Penang’s most distinctive seasonal attractions in a more meaningful way,” he said.
Wong noted that Penang’s durian tourism sector has evolved significantly over recent years and is no longer limited to fruit consumption alone.
Instead, it now combines culinary experiences, agricultural tourism, rural exploration and cultural immersion into a single tourism offering.
The initiative places particular emphasis on Balik Pulau, a region widely known for producing some of Malaysia’s most sought-after durian varieties.
Balik Pulau also holds a unique distinction as the only major durian-growing region located on an island in Malaysia.
Under the newly introduced five-day package, visitors will enjoy premium accommodation, guided orchard visits and unlimited durian tasting sessions throughout the tour.
The itinerary also includes visits to some of Penang’s best-known attractions such as George Town, the city’s famous street art trail, heritage clan jetties, Penang Hill and several cultural and lifestyle destinations across the state.
Wong said the programme supports broader efforts linked to Visit Malaysia Year 2026 and demonstrates how local agricultural products can be transformed into internationally marketable tourism experiences.
He expressed confidence that continued collaboration between state tourism agencies and national tourism authorities would help increase visitor arrivals from Hong Kong while enhancing Penang’s position as a premier experiential tourism destination in Asia.
The initiative is also expected to further showcase Penang’s unique blend of gastronomy, heritage, nature and local culture to a wider international audience.
