Malaysia’s Survival Depends on Unity as ‘One Family’, Anwar Tells Foreign Diplomats
PUTRAJAYA, Feb 23 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia’s continued existence as a diverse nation depends on its people’s ability to remain united and embrace each other as one family.
He made the remarks during a breaking-of-fast event hosted by the Kementerian Luar Negeri Malaysia at Wisma Putra, attended by members of the diplomatic community.
Anwar said Malaysia’s stability and harmony have always been rooted in mutual respect among its multiracial and multireligious population.
“Our survival depends on our ability to accept one another and live together as one family,” he said.
Respect among communities strengthens national harmony
He noted that Malaysia’s unity is clearly demonstrated during major cultural and religious celebrations such as Chinese New Year, Pongal, and Ramadan.
Anwar highlighted how communities often show consideration for one another, including adjusting celebrations to respect religious observances.
He also said many non-Muslims attending the event chose to participate in the breaking of fast as a sign of respect.
He described such gestures as part of Malaysia’s long-standing tradition of mutual understanding.
Shared respect across faiths key to future stability
Anwar also shared that he had attended a Thaipusam event as a gesture of respect to the Hindu community.
He said Malaysians must continue respecting each other’s beliefs while remaining committed to their own values.
Although he acknowledged the presence of divisive voices, Anwar said most Malaysians continue to live peacefully together.
He said Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans, and Kadazans have long coexisted in harmony.
“This spirit of unity must be preserved as it is essential to our nation’s future and stability,” he said.
He reiterated that unity remains the foundation of Malaysia’s peace and long-term progress.
