MCW backs Azam Baki’s legal move against Bloomberg, affirms right to protect personal reputation

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Corruption Watch (MCW) has expressed its support for the lawsuit filed by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Azam Baki against Bloomberg L.P, emphasising that individuals have the legal right to defend their reputation.

MCW president Jais Abdul Karim said the legal action reflects the principles of the rule of law, which allow individuals to seek justice if they believe their reputation has been harmed.

Legal recourse seen as legitimate response

He noted that allegations should not be treated as established facts without proper legal examination.

Filing a lawsuit, he said, is an appropriate and lawful response if a report is believed to contain inaccuracies, misleading information, or bias.

He added that Azam’s decision represents his personal right under the law.

Legal action does not contradict media freedom

Jais also stressed that the lawsuit should not be viewed as an attempt to undermine press freedom.

Instead, he described it as a proper legal avenue to resolve disputes concerning facts and reputation.

He emphasised that media freedom carries responsibilities, including verifying information, ensuring accuracy, and maintaining balanced reporting.

These standards apply to both local and international media organisations.

Unverified claims may impact public confidence

MCW cautioned that sensational or unverified allegations could undermine public trust and investor confidence in national institutions.

He urged all parties to respect the legal process and avoid speculation while the matter is being addressed in court.

Azam seeking RM100 million in damages

The lawsuit follows a Bloomberg report published on February 10 that alleged Azam’s share ownership.

In his legal filing, Azam is seeking RM100 million in general, aggravated, and exemplary damages, along with interest and legal costs.

MCW said the court process will provide the appropriate platform to determine the facts and uphold fairness.
