MACC Releases Two Senior Government Officials on Bail Over RM900,000 Misappropriation Probe
Investigation Ongoing as Probe Papers Near Completion
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has released on bail a director-general and a director of a government agency who were detained to assist in investigations into the alleged misappropriation of about RM900,000.
Sources said the two men, both in their 50s, were released last Friday and Saturday after being remanded since February 12.
They are suspected of abusing their positions by using agency funds for personal benefit.
Released After Statements Recorded
According to sources, the suspects were released after investigators completed recording their statements.
The MACC is now finalising investigation papers before submitting them to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action.
Both suspects were arrested on February 11 when they presented themselves at the MACC headquarters to assist in the probe.
Also Linked to Alleged False Umrah Claims
Apart from the alleged misappropriation, the suspects are believed to have submitted false claims worth about RM60,000 related to an umrah trip during an official visit to Jeddah between January 29 and February 4 last year.
Investigators believe the claims contained false information and documentation.
18 Witnesses Questioned, Assets Seized
MACC deputy chief commissioner (Operations) Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya confirmed the investigation and said statements had been recorded from 18 witnesses.
He added that several items, including clothing, electronic devices, gadgets, and sports equipment worth about RM57,000, had been seized.
The MACC said the investigation is ongoing and further action will depend on the findings and prosecutorial review.
