Nga Kor Ming: Housing Ministry Ready to Assist States, Local Councils in Legalising Unapproved Houses of Worship
IPOH, Feb 8 — The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) has reiterated its readiness to work closely with state governments and local authorities to carry out the legalisation of houses of worship that were constructed without proper approval.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said land-related matters fall under state jurisdiction, but stressed that KPKT remains committed to supporting efforts aimed at resolving such issues in a fair, orderly and lawful manner.
He noted that the ministry operates a dedicated Non-Islamic Houses of Worship (RIBI) Division to facilitate coordination and engagement with local councils in addressing long-standing issues involving unapproved religious structures.
“KPKT is prepared to play a supportive role and work together with all stakeholders to ensure the legalisation process is carried out smoothly and responsibly,” he told reporters after attending the Sumbangan Kasih Madani programme at SJKC Bercham here.
Nga emphasised that all houses of worship are subject to existing laws and regulations, including the requirement to obtain planning permission from local authorities.
“These requirements apply equally to all houses of worship, whether mosques, surau, churches or temples, without exception,” he said.
He also acknowledged that some religious buildings were constructed before the introduction of the Local Government Act and the National Land Code, with certain structures having existed for generations.
“In such cases, solutions must be pursued through proper legal and administrative processes. What matters is that these buildings do not disrupt public order, encroach on river reserves or obstruct traffic flow,” he added.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reiterated that the government does not endorse the construction of houses of worship that fail to comply with laws and regulations, regardless of race or religion, in order to preserve national harmony and unity.
