Anwar Rejects Critics of Malaysia’s Role in Mediating Thailand–Cambodia Conflict
PUTRAJAYA — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has strongly rejected criticism of Malaysia’s role as a mediator in easing tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, describing such remarks as rooted in misunderstanding and prejudice.
Anwar said Malaysia, as Chair of ASEAN, has acted strictly as a facilitator, helping to create space for dialogue and de-escalation without imposing decisions on the parties involved.
“Our position is to assist as a mediator and ensure hostilities are halted. The decisions, however, rest entirely with Thailand and Cambodia. We do not make decisions on their behalf,” he said at a press conference at the Prime Minister’s Office today.
He stressed that Malaysia has exercised caution and diplomacy in all discussions with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.
Anwar said all key outcomes, including those under the Kuala Lumpur Declaration and meetings of the General Border Committee and ASEAN foreign ministers, were achieved with the full understanding and consent of both countries.
He welcomed recent direct talks between Thailand and Cambodia in Yunnan, China, which focused on strengthening the ceasefire and rebuilding mutual confidence.
Anwar also expressed appreciation for the roles played by China and US President Donald Trump in supporting de-escalation efforts.
On Myanmar, Anwar said ASEAN leaders would continue to adopt a cautious, phased approach to avoid violence, division or premature legitimisation.
