Selangor Stays Calm Amid Global Uncertainty as Revenue Hits RM1.6 Billion

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government remains confident about its financial position despite ongoing global economic uncertainty, saying the state is still on track to meet its revenue target and sees no need for emergency measures.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said Selangor’s revenue collection has continued to perform positively, allowing the state government to maintain confidence in its fiscal outlook.

As of May this year, the state had collected RM1.6 billion in revenue, putting it well on course to achieve its RM2.8 billion target for 2026.

“We have not pressed the panic button.

“Instead, we are closely monitoring developments every week and every month,” Amirudin said during a press conference after launching the Selangor Resilience Strengthening Package Phase 1 at the Selangor State Secretary’s Office building here today.

According to him, the current revenue trend remains encouraging despite concerns over global market volatility, supply chain disruptions and external economic pressures.

He added that Selangor also recorded a budget surplus of RM300 million due to prudent spending and ongoing cost-saving measures implemented by the state government.

Although this year’s financial position may not be as strong as last year’s, Amirudin stressed that the state remains financially sound and continues to maintain healthy reserves.

“We still have strong reserves and our overall financial position remains healthy.

“At this stage, there is no need for drastic measures,” he said.

Amirudin explained that the state government is actively pursuing several initiatives to strengthen revenue generation and sustain economic growth.

Among the measures being implemented are land disposal programmes, changes to land-use conditions for industrial development and efforts to attract more domestic and foreign investments.

He said these initiatives are expected to create additional economic activities and contribute positively to the state’s long-term financial performance.

“Selangor remains one of the country’s main investment destinations.

“We are confident that new investments and development projects will continue to drive the state’s economy forward,” he said.

However, Amirudin acknowledged that the full impact of global economic uncertainty may only become clearer over the coming months.

For that reason, the state government is adopting a proactive approach by closely monitoring economic developments and preparing measures to cushion any potential impact on the people and businesses.

“We cannot take the global economic situation lightly.

“But at the same time, we do not want to overreact because Selangor’s economic fundamentals remain strong and we have the tools needed to manage future challenges,” he said.

Amirudin added that the state government’s priority is to safeguard public welfare while ensuring economic growth remains sustainable.

“The most important thing is to stay vigilant, act when necessary and ensure that the people and the economy remain protected against any changes taking place globally,” he said.
