Religious Affairs Minister Advises Against Birthday Celebrations Based on Mystical Themes
HULU LANGAT: Celebrations featuring ghostly, mythical or supernatural themes should not become a cultural norm, according to Zulkifli Hasan, who urged the public to focus on more meaningful and beneficial ways of marking special occasions.
The minister said birthday celebrations should serve as an opportunity to express gratitude for life’s blessings, strengthen family ties and promote positive values rather than becoming centred on themes that may generate controversy or misunderstanding.
According to him, social gatherings and celebrations should be guided by principles that encourage goodness, harmony and respect for religious teachings.
“When celebrating an important occasion such as a birthday, it is better to choose activities that bring blessings and benefit to those involved.
“We should avoid matters that are unnecessary, controversial or likely to create negative perceptions within society,” he said after attending the YADIM 2026 sacrificial meat contribution programme in Hulu Langat.
His comments came in response to public debate surrounding a recently viral birthday celebration that incorporated themes associated with mystical beings and supernatural folklore.
Images and videos from the event circulated widely online, prompting discussions over whether such concepts were appropriate from cultural and religious perspectives.
Following the controversy, Jabatan Hal Ehwal Agama Islam Kelantan reportedly called in individuals involved in organising the event to assist with inquiries.
Earlier, Mohamad Shukri Mohamad also weighed in on the issue, suggesting that celebrations should reflect gratitude for God’s blessings and avoid elements that could be interpreted as inconsistent with that purpose.
Zulkifli stressed that members of the public should seek guidance from recognised religious authorities whenever questions arise regarding matters connected to faith and religious sensitivities.
He said such guidance helps ensure that social practices remain aligned with Islamic teachings and contribute positively to society.
“We should always refer back to the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah, ensuring that whatever we do promotes goodness and benefits the wider community,” he said.
The minister added that birthdays can be meaningful occasions when used to strengthen family relationships, encourage appreciation and inspire actions that contribute to personal growth and spiritual well-being.
