Azam Baki Questioned by Police Over Businessman’s Threat Allegations
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Azam Baki spent nearly two hours at Bukit Aman police headquarters today as part of an investigation into allegations that he threatened businessman Albert Tei.
Azam said he arrived at the police headquarters at about 9 a.m. and fully cooperated with investigators throughout the statement-recording process.
According to him, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department questioned him on matters related to the allegations raised by the businessman in a police report lodged earlier this year.
He said the interview lasted approximately two hours and involved a detailed explanation of the issues under investigation.
Azam categorically denied all allegations made against him and maintained that he had never met or conducted any dealings with Albert Tei.
The former anti-graft chief stressed that there had never been any personal, professional or business relationship between them.
He also informed investigators that he had not appointed or instructed any lawyer to act on his behalf in relation to the businessman or any matters connected to the allegations.
To support his position, Azam said he submitted evidence to investigators showing that no direct interactions or dealings had ever taken place between him and the complainant.
“I have never met him, never conducted any dealings with him and have never sent any lawyer to represent me in dealings involving him,” he said.
The investigation stems from a police report lodged by Albert Tei, who alleged that he had been threatened.
Earlier, police confirmed that Azam would be called in to assist with the investigation as part of efforts to gather statements from all relevant parties.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director M. Kumar previously said the report was lodged on May 13.
He noted that the case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which relates to criminal intimidation.
Police are expected to complete the investigation before forwarding the findings to the Attorney General’s Chambers for further legal review and instructions.
The case has attracted public attention due to Azam’s former role as head of the country’s anti-corruption agency and the nature of the allegations being investigated.
