Mimi Fly Rearranges Busy Schedule to Fulfil Dream Role in Puteri Gunung Ledang Musical

KUALA LUMPUR: Mimi Fly says her packed entertainment schedule did not stop her from accepting a new challenge in the upcoming revival of the musical theatre production Puteri Gunung Ledang scheduled for October this year.

The 39-year-old singer and performer revealed that portraying the character Bayan in the epic production is a dream role she has long hoped to take on throughout her artistic career.

According to Mimi, whose full name is Shamimi Amalina Norhisham, despite juggling numerous performances and creative commitments, she viewed the opportunity as a valuable experience to further expand her artistic journey beyond singing.

“I’m currently very busy with various projects and work commitments, but when this opportunity came, I felt grateful to still be trusted to be part of such a major production.

“Theatre requires a completely different level of commitment compared to normal stage performances, so I had to carefully reorganise my schedule together with my management team,” she said.

She shared the experience when met during the Rise and Revive programme at IWK Eco Park recently.

Intensive Training Brings New Challenges

Mimi admitted that returning to musical theatre presented a very different experience compared to her usual music performances.

She explained that the intensive preparations involving dance classes, yoga sessions, acting workshops and continuous rehearsals demanded strong physical endurance and mental discipline.

“I haven’t been involved in a large-scale project like this since 2018, so stepping back into intensive rehearsals has been extremely tiring.

“Everything happens simultaneously, and it really requires a lot of discipline. At times, I genuinely feel exhausted and out of breath,” she said.

Despite the demanding schedule, Mimi said she enjoys working alongside a highly committed and disciplined production team.

She added that playing Bayan has long been one of her ambitions and believes the timing now feels right to embrace a new artistic challenge.

“I’ve always wanted to play this role, so when the offer finally came, I immediately felt this was the right moment for me to try something new in my career.

“I also see many fellow artistes exploring different creative fields including theatre, so I wanted to experience it myself,” she added.

Anticipated To Be One of 2026’s Biggest Musical Productions

The revival of Puteri Gunung Ledang is expected to become one of the biggest musical theatre productions of 2026 under the direction and executive production of Tiara Jacquelina.

The large-scale production will feature a blend of new-generation actors and established Malaysian performers, bringing fresh energy to the legendary Malay epic.

In the musical, the role of Bayan will be portrayed alternately by Mimi Fly and Nadia Aqilah as close companions to Gusti Puteri Raden Adjeng Retno.

The return of the iconic production is expected to reignite public excitement surrounding one of Malaysia’s most celebrated theatre works while introducing the story to a new generation of audiences.
