Gaza Flotilla Halted: 21 Vessels Intercepted, 175 Activists Including Malaysians Detained
PETALING JAYA, April 30 — A humanitarian mission bound for Gaza has entered a critical phase after 21 vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) were intercepted by Israeli forces, resulting in the detention of 175 activists, including 10 Malaysians.
According to Sumud Nusantara Command Centre Director-General Sani Araby Abdul Alim Araby, the incident occurred approximately 80 nautical miles from Greek waters, as the flotilla approached a key stage in its mission to deliver aid.
He said the interception not only disrupted the humanitarian effort but also raised serious concerns about the safety of unarmed activists onboard.
“To date, 21 vessels have been confirmed intercepted, with all activists transported to Israel using maritime assets controlled by the authorities,” he said in an official statement.
Among those detained are key members of the GSF Steering Committee, including Thiago Avila and Saif Abukeshek, individuals central to the mission’s planning and coordination.
Their detention is widely seen as an attempt to weaken the leadership structure and operational continuity of the flotilla.
In total, 175 activists have been detained, including 10 Malaysian nationals, intensifying concerns over their safety and potential diplomatic repercussions.
The incident also raises broader questions about freedom of navigation in international waters and the protection of humanitarian missions under international law.
In a related update, the vessel TamTam was not intercepted but sustained technical damage believed to be caused by external interference. All activists onboard have been confirmed safe.
The development underscores the growing challenges faced by humanitarian missions operating in volatile geopolitical environments, particularly in efforts to deliver aid to Gaza.
