Communications Ministry Condemns Gaza Flotilla Interception, Urges Public to Avoid Misinformation

KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 — Malaysia’s Communications Ministry has issued a strong warning against the spread of misinformation as tensions rise following an incident involving a humanitarian aid flotilla bound for Gaza.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the government strongly condemns the reported interception of vessels under the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) 2.0 mission by Israeli forces in international waters.

He described the incident as deeply concerning from both humanitarian and legal perspectives, particularly given the involvement of Malaysian citizens.

Fahmi said he received a detailed briefing from Dr Sani Araby Abdul Alim Araby, Director-General of the Sumud Nusantara Command Centre, regarding the situation involving 22 vessels participating in the mission.

“As of 7pm yesterday, communication was successfully re-established with one of the vessels, TamTam, after it had been cut off for more than 10 hours due to suspected sabotage affecting its equipment and engines,” he said in a social media statement.

However, the remaining 21 vessels have yet to be reached, raising concerns over the safety of those onboard and the continuity of the humanitarian mission.

Fahmi also confirmed that 10 Malaysians were involved in the flotilla, further heightening the seriousness of the situation.

“The Malaysian government strongly condemns what we view as a clear violation of international law, particularly as it involves our citizens engaged in a humanitarian mission,” he said.

Amid the unfolding crisis, the minister stressed the importance of accurate information and responsible communication.

He said the Communications Ministry will continue to monitor media coverage and information flows to ensure that only verified and reliable information reaches the public.

Fahmi warned that misinformation and unverified reports could create confusion and potentially undermine humanitarian and diplomatic efforts.

He urged the public to rely on official sources, including SNCC, government agencies and mainstream media outlets, when seeking updates on the situation.

“In times of international crisis, it is crucial that information is handled responsibly to avoid unnecessary panic or misunderstanding,” he said.

The ministry emphasised that clear and accurate communication plays a critical role in maintaining public trust and ensuring that developments are understood within the proper context.
