No Immediate State Poll Expected in Negeri Sembilan, Decision Rests with Ruler
KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 — Negeri Sembilan is unlikely to head into a state election despite the ongoing political uncertainty, though the final decision remains with the state ruler and the legislative assembly.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the possibility of a snap election appears low for now, but stressed that any move would ultimately depend on Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir and proceedings in the Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN).
“Most likely not. However, it is subject to Tuanku’s decision and, of course, the DUN sitting,” he told reporters after attending a closed-door meeting with Huawei’s top leadership during the launch of its AI Lab and Innovation Centre.
He was responding to questions on whether a state election would be called as a way to resolve the current political impasse.
Earlier, Anwar, who also chairs Pakatan Harapan (PH), said any developments regarding the state administration would be announced at an appropriate time.
The situation in Negeri Sembilan has drawn heightened attention following a shift in political support that has raised questions over the stability of the state government.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, president of United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), confirmed that he will meet Anwar in the near future to discuss the unfolding developments.
The meeting is expected to focus on the decision by 14 Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen to withdraw support from the state government led by Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun.
The withdrawal has triggered a political crisis in the state, sparking speculation over possible scenarios including the formation of a new government, continuation of a minority administration, or a potential dissolution of the assembly.
Despite the uncertainty, Anwar’s remarks suggest that a state election is not currently the preferred option, with attention instead shifting to constitutional processes and consultations among key stakeholders.
Observers note that the coming days will be crucial in determining whether the political situation stabilises or evolves into a broader realignment of power within the state.
