Selangor Govt Closely Monitoring Probe into Insult Against Sultan
SHAH ALAM, April 28 — The Selangor state government is keeping close tabs on investigations into an online post deemed insulting to Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, with updates to be formally conveyed to the ruler.
Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said he has engaged with Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil to express the state’s position and to call for swift and firm enforcement action by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
“Initial findings indicate that the account owner uploaded the post before deleting the Facebook account shortly after,” he said in a statement.
Amirudin added that the state government will continue coordinating closely with the Ministry of Communications and the Royal Malaysia Police to monitor progress, while ensuring that any developments are duly reported to the Sultan.
The controversy stems from a viral image circulated online depicting a pig dressed in royal attire, allegedly intended to insult the Selangor ruler. The incident has sparked widespread concern over the misuse of social media and the potential implications for public harmony.
The post gained traction amid ongoing debates surrounding a statement by Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki, whose remarks during a recent assembly session touched on the issue of pig farming in the state.
Amirudin stressed that the public must exercise responsibility when using digital platforms and avoid actions that could undermine social cohesion or disrespect the royal institution.
“The Selangor government strongly condemns any act that insults or tarnishes the dignity of the royal institution, which is upheld by His Royal Highness,” he said.
He reiterated that the monarchy, particularly the Malay rulers, plays a crucial role not only as heads of Islam but also as symbols of unity in Malaysia’s diverse society.
Earlier, members of the Selangor Royal Council had lodged a police report over the offensive content, calling for authorities to identify those responsible and take strict action.
Council member Salehuddin Saidin said the report was filed to ensure enforcement agencies act decisively against the perpetrators.
Authorities are continuing investigations under relevant laws, while public attention remains focused on how swiftly action will be taken in response to the incident.
The issue also follows recent remarks by the Sultan regarding concerns over pig farming in Selangor, including challenges related to land constraints and proximity to residential areas.
