Wanxiang A123 launches world’s first semi-solid-state energy storage system, raising industry safety standards
DETROIT: Wanxiang A123 Systems Corp. has unveiled the world’s first semi-solid-state energy storage system integrated with full immersion cooling technology, setting a new benchmark for safety and reliability in the energy storage industry.
The global launch, held at Wanxiang Innovation Energy City, marks a major shift in how safety is approached in the sector, moving from reactive fire suppression to comprehensive risk prevention at the system level.
During the event, the company introduced its Star Series battery cells and Star River Series energy storage solutions, which combine semi-solid-state battery technology with advanced cooling systems. This integration is designed to reduce the risks of fire, explosion and system failure, particularly in high-risk applications such as data centres, power grids and industrial facilities.
According to Wanxiang A123, the Star Series cells utilise proprietary technology to address electrolyte leakage and chemical instability, common issues in conventional lithium-ion batteries. Their performance was demonstrated through a 10-needle puncture test, in which a 100Ah cell remained stable without fire, explosion or thermal propagation.
At the system level, the Star River Series employs full immersion cooling to maintain consistent cell temperatures, with variations kept within two degrees Celsius even under demanding operating conditions. This approach helps prevent thermal runaway and improves long-term system reliability.
Beyond safety, the new platform also delivers strong performance, offering more than 10,000 charge cycles at room temperature and over 7,000 cycles at 45 degrees Celsius, around 40 per cent higher than the industry average. Its high-temperature resilience is also expected to reduce average energy costs by up to 15 per cent.
The Star River Series is available in multiple configurations to meet the needs of various sectors, including high-voltage systems for data centres, IP68-rated outdoor cabinets, modular containers for offshore use and large-scale container systems for industrial projects.
To further enhance safety monitoring, Wanxiang A123 has introduced an AI-powered Wireless Battery Management System capable of detecting thermal risks up to 10 minutes earlier than conventional systems.
The company said the innovation supports global efforts to promote clean and sustainable energy while strengthening the development of safer, more efficient and resilient energy infrastructure for the future.
