VM2026: Zahid Urges Targeted Promotion Strategy to Attract Different Tourist Segments
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 1, 2026 — Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has stressed that promotional strategies for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) must be tailored to specific target groups rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.
He said different segments of tourists have varying interests, preferences, and expectations, making customised marketing strategies essential to maximise the impact of tourism campaigns.
“Each target group is drawn to different types of events and attractions.
“We cannot rely on a single form of publicity to appeal to everyone. Promotion must be structured based on clearly defined segments,” he said.
Zahid was speaking to reporters after launching the Visit Malaysia 2026 Run in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.
Commenting on the event’s response, he noted that participation exceeded expectations, with more than 5,000 runners taking part despite only around 3,000 official registrations.
According to him, the strong turnout reflects growing public interest in tourism-related activities and highlights social unity, as participants came from diverse backgrounds.
“This is a very encouraging development and should be continued. It shows strong public support for national tourism initiatives,” he said.
Zahid also expressed hope that the international running and marathon events scheduled for August would attract more overseas participants, helping to boost tourist arrivals.
“With effective publicity, inbound tourism is expected to continue growing and contribute positively to the national economy,” he added.
Meanwhile, he praised the proactive efforts of the Kementerian Pelancongan, Seni dan Budaya Malaysia and Tourism Malaysia in organising familiarisation trips involving wholesalers, retailers, airlines, and media practitioners to strengthen tourism promotion.
He said such integrated initiatives are crucial in enhancing Malaysia’s position as a leading tourism destination ahead of VM2026.
