SWCorp Cracks Down on Littering With 941 Fines and Mandatory Public Cleaning Orders

KANGAR, Feb 26 — Malaysia’s Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) has taken firm enforcement action against littering, issuing 941 violation notices across seven states to individuals caught polluting public spaces.

SWCorp chief executive officer Khalid Mohamed said the majority of offenders were Malaysians, while the rest involved foreign nationals.

He said the enforcement reflects the agency’s commitment to maintaining public cleanliness and ensuring compliance with waste management laws.

“SWCorp will continue to enforce the law strictly and will not tolerate violations,” he said.

Community Service Introduced to Reform Offenders

In addition to financial penalties, SWCorp has introduced community service orders requiring offenders to clean public areas.

This approach is intended to educate offenders and encourage behavioural change.

Khalid said cigarette butts remain the most common type of litter found in public places.

He said the initiative aims to create greater awareness about environmental responsibility.

Court Imposes Fine and Community Service for Littering

In one case, three men were fined RM1,000 each by the Sessions Court after pleading guilty to littering.

They were also ordered to complete community service.

Failure to pay the fine could result in jail time.

Authorities Urge Public to Respect Cleanliness Laws

SWCorp hopes the enforcement will encourage the public to take littering seriously.

Khalid stressed that maintaining cleanliness is a shared responsibility.

He said enforcement efforts will continue to ensure compliance and protect the environment.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to promote a cleaner and healthier Malaysia.
