Severe Snowstorms Hit Japan, Malaysian Embassy Issues Safety Advisory to Travellers

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kedutaan Besar Malaysia di Tokyo has issued a safety advisory to Malaysians in Japan following severe winter weather affecting several major regions.

The warning comes amid heavy snowfall, icy road conditions, and winter storms that could disrupt daily activities and pose serious travel risks.

In an official statement, the embassy said the situation is being closely monitored by the Japan Meteorological Agency, which has forecast prolonged harsh conditions in the coming days.

Regions Under Weather Alert

Areas placed under alert include Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Koshin, Tokai, Hokuriku, Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku, northern and southern Kyushu, as well as the Amami Islands.

These conditions are expected to affect public transportation services, highways, and airports, while increasing the risk of accidents due to slippery surfaces.

Travel Advisory for Malaysians

The embassy urged Malaysians in Japan to closely follow weather updates, adjust travel plans accordingly, and avoid unnecessary movement in high-risk areas.

“Travellers are advised to prioritise personal safety and remain cautious throughout this period of severe weather,” the statement said.

In case of emergency, Malaysians are encouraged to contact the embassy in Tokyo via official hotlines or email.

Emphasis on Preparedness

The embassy also reminded travellers to ensure adequate travel insurance coverage, carry proper winter clothing, and keep emergency contacts easily accessible.

Such precautionary measures are essential to minimise risks and ensure safety during Japan’s extreme winter season.
