Selangor Zakat Distribution Reaches RM1.33 Billion, Surpassing Collection Total
SHAH ALAM — Sharafuddin Idris Shah has expressed satisfaction over the performance of Lembaga Zakat Selangor after the institution distributed RM1.33 billion in zakat assistance during 2025, exceeding its total collection of RM1.31 billion for the same period.
In a statement issued by the Selangor Royal Office, more than 60 per cent of the total zakat distribution was channelled towards poor and hardcore poor recipients involving over 75,000 families throughout the state.
More Families Identified Through Expanded Outreach
According to the statement, the increase in newly identified asnaf recipients was driven by proactive efforts undertaken by Zakat Selangor to strengthen its assessment process, improve detection mechanisms and widen access to assistance for eligible households.
The institution also recorded positive progress in helping vulnerable groups improve their living conditions.
More than 2,800 poor and hardcore poor families were reported to have successfully moved out of the poverty cycle through continuous intervention programmes implemented by the agency.
Focus on Essential Assistance
The Sultan of Selangor stressed that zakat distribution should continue prioritising essential forms of aid including monthly financial support, food assistance, housing and educational aid.
The royal statement noted that such assistance remains important in safeguarding the welfare of vulnerable communities amid ongoing economic challenges.
Clarification on Hardcore Poverty
At the same time, Sultan Sharafuddin emphasised that the distribution of zakat to poor recipients is determined based on the “had kifayah” calculation and should not be confused with official hardcore poverty statistics in the state.
The statement explained that despite claims suggesting hardcore poverty has been eradicated in Selangor, records from Zakat Selangor still showed an increase in new poor and hardcore poor households involving around 14,000 families in 2025.
The Sultan expressed concern that misunderstandings surrounding the issue could create inaccurate public perceptions regarding the actual needs of zakat recipients.
Concern Over Public Perception
According to the statement, the ruler also cautioned against assumptions that there are no longer poor communities requiring assistance in Selangor, as such perceptions could negatively affect zakat contributions from the public.
The palace added that zakat payers must continue understanding the importance of contributions in supporting eligible recipients across the state.
Sultan Sharafuddin also expressed hope that Zakat Selangor would continue carrying out its responsibilities in managing zakat collection and distribution transparently, responsibly and with integrity in accordance with Islamic principles.
