‘Rumah Bangsa’ Reflects UMNO’s Founding Principles, Says Mohd Sharkar
KUANTAN – The “Rumah Bangsa” concept introduced by the leadership of United Malays National Organisation reflects the party’s founding principles rather than a new political strategy.
UMNO Supreme Council member Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin said the initiative mirrors the party’s original objective of uniting Malays when UMNO was established in 1946 to oppose the formation of the Malayan Union.
He explained that the concept aims to strengthen unity among Malay political figures while offering a pathway for former members and leaders to reconnect with the party.
“When UMNO was formed, its central mission was to unite Malays under a strong political platform. Rumah Bangsa carries the same spirit,” he said in a statement.
Effort to Strengthen Malay Political Unity
According to Mohd Sharkar, the initiative was introduced by UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as part of efforts to reinforce unity among Malays in Malaysia’s evolving political landscape.
He said the concept allows former UMNO members and leaders to return while contributing to the party’s political direction.
At the same time, he stressed that UMNO has the right to pursue such initiatives as part of its strategy to strengthen the party.
“Rumah Bangsa is UMNO’s initiative to strengthen its political position. Those who disagree with the concept should not interfere in the party’s internal affairs,” he said.
Positive Reception From Political Leaders
Mohd Sharkar noted that several prominent Malaysian political figures have expressed openness towards the Rumah Bangsa idea.
Among them are Hishammuddin Hussein, Noh Omar, Mohd Salim Mohd Sharif and Khairy Jamaluddin.
He said the positive response indicates growing support for efforts aimed at strengthening unity among Malay leaders.
Their involvement, he added, could help reinforce UMNO’s political strength ahead of future elections.
However, Mohd Sharkar emphasised that the party is not forcing anyone to return.
“UMNO simply provides an opportunity for those who wish to rejoin and contribute to the party’s struggle,” he said.
Voters Able to Judge Political Parties
Mohd Sharkar also pointed out that the Malaysian political landscape has allowed various parties to govern at different times, giving voters the opportunity to evaluate their performance.
He believes the public is capable of determining which political party truly represents their interests.
He added that UMNO will continue focusing on key issues that form the foundation of its political agenda, including education, economic development, protection of Bumiputera rights and job opportunities.
He also dismissed claims that the Rumah Bangsa concept is meant to restore UMNO as a dominant political force.
Instead, he said the initiative symbolises unity.
“Rumah Bangsa is not about domination. It represents unity and the effort to strengthen the collective future of the Malay community and the nation,” he said.
