RM5.4 Billion in Tax Refunds Disbursed, 2024 Cases to Be Finalised by Year-End

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 12 — The government has disbursed RM5.4 billion in excess tax refunds for the 2023 assessment year as of February 10, 2026, covering 38,629 cases, and expects to complete the remaining payments within this month.

Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the progress is ahead of the initial first-quarter target, reflecting improved efficiency in refund processing and fiscal administration.

Refunds for the 2024 assessment year are projected to be fully settled before the end of this year, in line with the government’s commitment to ensuring smoother cash flow for taxpayers.

Responding to Jimmy Puah Wee Tse (PH-Tebrau) in the Dewan Rakyat, Amir Hamzah confirmed that refunds for the 2022 assessment year and earlier were fully cleared last year.

He noted that the volume of processed cases increased significantly to 3.7 million in 2025 compared with 2.7 million in 2024, underscoring intensified efforts to reduce outstanding claims.

Focus on Older Cases and MSMEs

The government has prioritised long-pending cases through a first-in, first-out approach to ensure equitable settlement.

Refunds to individuals and micro, small and medium enterprises facing liquidity pressures have also been given priority to support operational stability.

Amir Hamzah reaffirmed that the refund process is being managed transparently and in accordance with sound governance principles, safeguarding the rights of all taxpayers.
