Rising Abuse of Tourist Passes Prompts Government Action to Protect Local Businesses
ALOR SETAR: The Malaysian government has stepped up efforts to curb the growing misuse of Social Visit Passes (PLS) by foreign nationals, amid concerns over its impact on domestic traders.
Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said recent monitoring shows a gradual increase in cases involving tourists engaging in illegal work and business activities.
He noted that Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia has uncovered various tactics used to bypass immigration rules.
“Social visit passes are meant solely for tourism, not commercial gain,” he said.
Unfair Competition for Local Traders
Saifuddin revealed that some visitors accept business orders in Malaysia, complete the work abroad, and return with cheaper offers that undercut local operators.
“This creates an uneven playing field and weakens local enterprises that operate within the law,” he explained.
He added that such practices also affect consumer confidence and market stability.
Special Task Force to Strengthen Oversight
To address the issue, a special task force coordinated by the Kementerian Kewangan Malaysia has been established to enhance enforcement and coordination.
Immigration and border agencies are now intensifying inspections and legal action.
“Malaysia welcomes visitors, but compliance with local laws is non-negotiable,” he stressed.
Development Projects on Track
During his visit, Saifuddin also inspected the RM17.5 million Kedah Regional Development Authority Business Facilities Centre, which is nearing completion and expected to commence operations by August.
