Polis Diraja Malaysia: Accidental Pedal Press Suspected in SUV Crash That Killed Student

KOTA BHARU: Preliminary investigations by the Polis Diraja Malaysia indicate that a fatal accident involving a female student at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tanjong Mas was likely caused by unintended acceleration after the SUV driver accidentally pressed the accelerator.

Kota Bharu district police chief Mohd Azmir Damiri said the incident occurred at around 1.50pm within the school compound.

He explained that the female driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle, which surged forward and struck two students positioned near the school surau.

“At the time, both victims were putting on their shoes in front of the surau when the SUV crashed into them before hitting a concrete structure,” he said.

One Fatality, One Seriously Injured

One of the victims, Nur Fatimatul Hawa Mohd Azaudin, 13, sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second victim suffered serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment in the red zone at Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II.

Post-Mortem and Ongoing Probe

The deceased has been sent to Hospital Pakar Universiti Sains Malaysia (HPUSM) for a post-mortem examination.

The SUV driver was unharmed.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, with further investigations ongoing to determine all contributing factors.

School Safety Under Scrutiny

The incident has reignited concerns over safety within school compounds, particularly regarding vehicle movement in areas where students gather.

Authorities are expected to review safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
