PM signals possible exemption for Malaysian Armed Forces spending despite procurement freeze

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has indicated that frozen procurement funds allocated for the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) could be released to ensure military operations continue without disruption.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the Prime Minister conveyed this during a meeting with senior Ministry of Defence officials and top military leaders at Wisma Perwira earlier today.

He said Anwar, who also holds the Finance Minister portfolio, acknowledged the importance of maintaining the armed forces’ operational readiness and ensuring that ongoing activities are not compromised.

“The Prime Minister understands the need to preserve readiness and ongoing operations. He emphasised that procurement freezes must be handled carefully so they do not affect operational effectiveness,” he said at a press conference after attending the Ihya’ Ramadan programme.

Mohamed Khaled added that Anwar agreed exemptions could be considered in cases where operational needs require immediate attention.

On January 16, the Prime Minister ordered a temporary suspension of procurement involving the Malaysian Armed Forces and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) following controversies linked to alleged corruption and abuse of power in defence-related procurements.

The freeze was implemented to allow authorities to review procedures and ensure all procurement activities comply with regulations and governance standards.

Mohamed Khaled said Anwar also stressed that future procurement must be conducted transparently and responsibly.

He noted that the government fully supports the Ministry of Defence’s efforts to strengthen governance and improve procurement integrity.

At the same time, Anwar highlighted the importance of ensuring military preparedness remains strong, particularly in light of evolving regional and global geopolitical challenges.

The Prime Minister also emphasised the need to safeguard the welfare of military personnel, including improving housing conditions to enhance their quality of life.
