Malaysia plans to introduce virtual taekwondo at 2027 SEA Games
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24 — Malaysia is set to introduce a new dimension to taekwondo competition at the 2027 SEA Games by proposing virtual taekwondo (VTKD) as part of the event programme when it hosts the regional Games.
Taekwondo Malaysia technical director R. Dhanaraj said the initiative reflects growing confidence in the discipline, following encouraging performances by Malaysian athletes, including their gold medal success at the HOPE International Taekwondo Championship in Cambodia.
He noted that adding VTKD alongside the existing kyorugi and poomsae events could provide additional opportunities for the national team to secure podium finishes.
“We see strong potential in this discipline. With more events available, we hope Malaysia can achieve at least one or two gold medals,” he said after attending a meeting at the National Sports Council.
Dhanaraj explained that virtual taekwondo integrates physical performance with digital simulation, allowing athletes’ movements to be tracked and displayed as virtual combat actions.
“Athletes perform real kicks and punches, and these actions are reflected instantly in a virtual environment, creating a competitive digital format,” he said.
He added that the concept has generated interest among neighbouring countries, including Singapore, which has expressed support for expanding the discipline in Southeast Asia.
According to him, broader regional backing could help establish VTKD as a recognised competitive category.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s kyorugi squad, including Syafiq Zuber, will participate in an intensive overseas training programme in Thailand as part of preparations for the Asian Games 2026 qualifiers.
Dhanaraj said international exposure is crucial, especially for heavyweight competitors, as local training options in that category remain limited.
Syafiq previously earned a silver medal in the under-87kg division at the 2025 SEA Games.
