PKR Leader Questions Wong Chen’s Strategy in Ayer Hitam Land Dispute, Highlights FOI Mechanism

PETALING JAYA: A Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leader has challenged the approach taken by Subang MP Wong Chen in addressing the controversy over land near the Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve, suggesting that formal legal channels should have been prioritised.

Deputy secretary-general Bryan Ng Yih Miin argued that actions such as issuing informal letters and holding press briefings do not carry legal force to compel authorities to respond.

He pointed out that Selangor’s Freedom of Information (FOI) enactment, in place since 2013, offers a structured and enforceable process for requesting official information from the state government.

Calls for Use of Legal Mechanisms

Bryan said the absence of an FOI application raises questions, particularly given Wong Chen’s legal training and experience as a three-term lawmaker.

He stressed that FOI requests are the appropriate channel for obtaining detailed and legally binding responses, especially when transparency is being demanded.

“If the explanations provided are insufficient, the FOI mechanism should be used to secure official clarification rather than relying solely on public statements,” he said.

Land Sale Issue Remains Under Scrutiny

The issue gained attention after Wong criticised the Selangor government for failing to respond to multiple letters regarding the proposed sale of about 68.4 hectares of land near the environmentally sensitive area.

The matter has drawn public concern due to its proximity to a forest reserve and its potential environmental impact.

Wong is reported to have sent three letters since December, conducted a site inspection and held media engagements to press for answers, but has yet to receive an official reply.

Authorities Clarify Land Status

Selangor environment executive councillor Jamaliah Jamaluddin previously stated that the land had been degazetted as a forest reserve since 1926.

Meanwhile, the Subang Jaya City Council has indicated that no development applications have been submitted for the site so far.

The issue is expected to remain in focus as it touches on governance, transparency, and environmental considerations.
